International Exchange Program – Nursing

The UM SONHS’ continuously expanding international student exchange program reflects our commitment to equipping the next generation of the worldwide healthcare workforce with skills to care for progressively diverse patient populations, and serve as leaders in an increasingly globalized health care arena.  Global studies programs now include formal bi-directional exchange agreements with hospitals and institutions of higher healthcare education in Australia, Brazil, Chile, Dominican Republic, Haiti, India, Mexico, Spain and Taiwan.  During 2-to-4 week credit-earning healthcare immersion experiences in these countries, students are given the opportunity to integrate a global perspective into their health professions education.  The school also regularly receives international faculty and student visitors, who participate in healthcare knowledge exchange, simulation education scenarios, curriculum consultation activities and visits to local community partner hospitals to observe clinical nursing instruction in action. The program has to-date been undertaken by nearly 800 students, who are now in the field utilizing their acquired clinical resourcefulness and cultural competencies to benefit immeasurable patients and communities.
