"PED to PICU Transition Mission"

The goal of this study was to improve handover and transport of pediatric patients from the emergency department to the pediatric intensive care unit. Using a mixed methods design, we investigated staff members’ satisfaction with the current handover and transport process. In Phase I, we conducted focus groups with physicians and nurses working in the pediatric emergency department and intensive care unit and quantitatively surveyed staff satisfaction. In Phase II, we developed a tailored intervention inclusive of a standardized interdisciplinary handover tool and established specific transport criteria. In Phase III, we examined the impact of the intervention on staff satisfaction. We plan to examine further the impact of the intervention on patient outcomes. Manuscripts are in preparation.
