Clinical Information

All students admitted to the School of Nursing and Health Studies’ (SONHS) nursing programs must successfully complete a set of clinical clearance requirements prior to beginning their nursing coursework.  For undergraduates in the Traditional BSN program, these criteria must be met prior to beginning clinical coursework.  Students admitted to the Accelerated BSN or graduate programs must complete these requirements prior to their first day of classes.

Matriculation into nursing coursework is contingent upon students’ successful completion of all clinical clearance requirements. Once enrolled, students are expected to remain current and in good standing on all required immunizations, certifications, and licensures in order to meet the requirements set forth by our clinical partners.

The SONHS uses American DataBank’s Complio system to facilitate the clinical clearance process.  Please read the information below to learn how you can complete and maintain your clinical clearance.

Clinical Clearance Requirements

Our clinical clearance requirements include four main areas:

1) Background Checks: This includes two fingerprint screenings that provide information from various agency reports, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), Agency for Health Care Administration Background Screening (AHCA), Office of the Inspector General (OIG), General Services Administration (GSA), and Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC), among others

  • You must have a background report without any infractions, regardless of how any infractions may have been resolved or adjudicated.  Results are typically generated within 5 business days and are sent directly to the SONHS.  Please note that your fingerprint screenings must be completed in the State of Florida.  Therefore, we recommend any non-Florida resident plan to arrive at least 5 business days before the first day of classes to complete their background checks.

2) Drug Tests: This includes 1 10-panel drug screen completed upon admission and 1 random 10-panel drug screen completed at the direction of the SONHS

  • You must have a negative drug test free of illegal substances as specified by the Substance Abuse Policy listed in the Student Handbook. Your results will be sent directly to the SONHS.

3) Immunization and Physical Exam Records: This includes a current physical exam and valid Flu, Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR), Meningococcal Meningitis, Varicella, Tetanus/Diptheria/Pertussis, and Tuberculosis (PPD)

  • You must have valid immunization and physical exam records on file in Complio at all times.  To submit proof of your immunizations and physical exam, download the SONHS Immunization Form and the SONHS Physical Exam Form, complete them with your healthcare provider, and upload them into Complio.

4) Certifications and Licensures: This includes all certifications and/or licensures required for your academic program

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers: All students must have and maintain an active BLS for Healthcare Providers certification throughout their academic program.  The SONHS only accepts BLS for Healthcare Providers certifications from the American Heart Association.  To find an American Heart Association BLS course near you, visit cpr.heart.org.  Upload a signed copy of your active BLS card (front and back) to Complio.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS): Only students enrolled in the BSN-to-DNP Nurse Anesthesia, MSN Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, and Post-Master’s Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Certificate programs must have and maintain an active ACLS certification.  Upload a signed copy of your active ACLS card (front and back) to Complio.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS):Only students enrolled in the BSN-to-DNP Nurse Anesthesia program must have and maintain an active PALS certification.  Upload a signed copy of your active PALS card (front and back) to Complio.
  • RN License: Students enrolled in the BSN-to-DNP Nurse Anesthesia, MSN, PhD, and Post-Master’s Certificate programs must have and maintain an active and unrestricted RN license to practice in the State of Florida.  Students enrolled in the MSN-to-DNP program must have and maintain an active and unrestricted RN license to practice in their state or territory of current practice.  Upload a copy of your RN license to Complio.
