Resources for Researchers

SONHS is dedicated to enabling researchers through its Research Support Services and Resources.  Physical facilities such as the cutting-edge Simulation Hospital, practical resources such as the Measures Library and Grant Writing and Application Support, as well as a myriad of other services contribute to the success of investigators locally, nationally, and internationally.  This website also details opportunities that expose and engage students in current and ongoing SONHS research projects.

SONHS Research Infrastructure (SRI)

The SRI includes the Office of the Associate Dean for Research and Office of Research Administration. The mission of the SRI is to provide leadership and investigator resources for an environment that promotes scientific excellence and innovation, community collaboration, mentorship and high impact dissemination. Research Project and Proposal Development. The SRI aims to serve as an incubator that facilitates and nurtures the development of programs of research and contributes to the success of emerging investigators; and to identify and utilize innovative research and analytic methods to enhance research. To this end, SRI coordinates services for data management, statistics and methodology consultation and support, and consultation for IRB submissions. The SRI oversees a process for pre-review of research proposals, including mock study section review for research grant applications.

Writing and Dissemination Support

The SRI provides resources for preparation of manuscripts for peer reviewed publication and for conference abstract submission including individual and group editing and writing support as well as faculty writing retreats. Additionally, the SRI coordinates with SONHS and UM communications personnel to publicize and promote the research accomplishments of SONHS faculty, students and community partners through the SONHS websites, various UMSONHS and UM outlets and social media outlets, as well as press releases for mass media and trade/professional publications. For grant writing, faculty can request assistance from James Britton, attend writing groups, and solicit reviewers for their grant applications.

Fiscal and Grants Management

The SRI provides pre-and post-award services to faculty that include budget development for planning and preparing grant applications, fiscal management for studies, human resources services, and support for submitting proposals and reports to funding agencies and works closely with the UM Office of Research Administration for timely submission of grant proposals and fiscal reports.

Quality Assurance

The School of Nursing and Health Studies at the University of Miami offers quality assurance support to our researchers to safeguard the success of all our research studies. Quality assurance support is available to our researchers throughout the entire process from IRB submission to a final quality assurance visit. The Quality Assurance (QA) Unit is responsible for verifying compliance with regulatory and participant safety requirements, ensuring that all aspects of protocol implementation are ready to initiate study enrollment, and ensures routine monitoring of all data collected in the protocol. The main QA functions are to identify potential factors that could adversely impact research studies, to develop procedures to prevent such issues, and to ensure that corrective action is taken when these types of problems do occur.

Statistical Analyses

SONHS has hired a data manager to assist our faculty with data analyses. The link for the Methods & Statistics Core - Assistance Request Form is found under “Methods and Statistics Core Support” within the SONHS Research Central folder.

Blackboard

Blackboard houses resources for our SONHS faculty and staff to assist in their mission driven research. The SONHS: Research Central contains guidance from IRB protocol submission to grant writing and statistical analyses. The purpose of this organization is to support research and dissemination activities. Within this organization, you will be able to find resources for grant preparation, writing, and submission as well as manuscript preparation and submission.

Simulation Hospital

The Simulation Hospital acts as a resource center for developing and testing clinical best-evidence practices, mass casualty protocols, materials, and technology to address catastrophic events like infectious disease outbreaks. The International Academy for Clinical Simulation and Research at the Simulation Hospital offers simulation-based educational and training programs, research initiatives, and innovation and collaboration opportunities for students, faculty, and community partners.

Measures Library

The Center of Excellence for Health Disparities Research: El Centro aims to advance capacity for research with non-English speaking participants through this collection of measures with Spanish translations. By facilitating access to translated measures we aim to encourage investigators to include non-English speaking participants in their studies.

We hope to have an interactive library with contributions from the broader community of researchers and look forward to your comments and additions. We invite you to contribute translated measures that you have used in your research. If you are an author of a measure contained in the library and have corrections to any of the materials posted or wish for your measure to be removed, please let us know. Contact Jennifer Chavez (elcentro@miami.edu) to comment or to contribute to the library.

The El Centro Measures Library is available to the research community for informational purposes only. If you intend to use any of the measures contained in the library, please contact the author or company directly to either obtain permission or purchase the measure if it is not in the public domain.
