The UM SONHS’ global collaborative exchange agreement with National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences has been in place since summer of 2011. Taiwanese students travel to Miami for immersion experiences in the U.S. health culture organized and hosted by our school’s faculty. Under this same agreement, UM SONHS students travel to Taipei, Taiwan in the Republic of China, where they learn about integrative health care modalities and their incorporation into advanced nursing practice. While in Taipei, our students attend sessions on acupuncture, aromatherapy, herbal medicines, and other traditional Chinese and Eastern healthcare practices. They learn about how prevention and wellness are at the center of the Taiwanese health care system, which is organized around maintaining health rather than regaining health from illness. These are valuable health care techniques that many of our students have indicated an interest in integrating into their American healthcare practice upon graduation.
