Welcome from the Dean

Dean Hudson Santos
I want to welcome you to the School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS) at the University of Miami and encourage you to explore all the ways we may support you. This institution has been pushing boundaries of what is possible in health care education, research, and clinical practice since pioneering South Florida’s first collegiate nursing program in 1948.

Today, our school represents a new vision for health care education, with cutting-edge academic and research programs, facilities, and faculty. We offer an array of accredited, forward-thinking degree programs in nursing, health sciences, and public health, all designed to anticipate evolving standards for national and global health systems.

Our student body is composed of some 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students from around the state, nation, and world. Our professors are not only active practitioners, health scientists, and scholars; they are exceptional educators who mentor, guide, and collaborate with students at all levels, building relationships and fostering a robust learning environment.

Together, SONHS students, faculty, and staff promote an environment of support, inquiry, innovation, excellence, inclusion, and equity. We empower success through evidence-based best practice, critical thinking, team-based communication, and comprehensive care. Hands-on experience, participation in research studies, and real-world implementation of knowledge are hallmarks of a SONHS education.

We have strong professional relationships with over 200 health-focused facilities, including our academic partners at UHealth and Jackson Health Systems, as well as community-based organizations, foundations, nonprofits, and other institutions and enterprises that continually enrich the extensive clinical, academic, research, and field practice of our SONHS community.

Our Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs are top-notch and nationally ranked. Exemplary evidence of this outstanding preparation—at least 95 percent of these graduates pass licensing and certification exams on their first attempt. Our PhD in Nursing Science students attain prestigious grants, awards, and fellowships. Our public health program stands out with Council on Education for Public Health accreditation, and our health studies students go on to exceptional graduate programs, fellowships, and careers in medicine, law, epidemiology, physical therapy, and other related disciplines.

Our school’s immersive 41,000-square-foot Simulation Hospital Advancing Research and Education (S.H.A.R.E.®)—see the virtual tour!—as well as our Biobehavioral Research Laboratory, Anatomy and Physiology Lab, and other high-tech resources accelerate and amplify our ability to advance knowledge and understanding of human health, illness, biology, behavior, and everything in between.

The School currently ranks 16th in NIH funding to nursing schools nationwide, with a projected rise into the top 10. Through interdisciplinary studies encompassing nursing, public health, behavioral science, genetics, simulation education, and more, we focus on ending health disparities, realizing health equity, and addressing social determinants of health. Our team science approach unites students, faculty, and community members at the local, national, and international level toward a common goal of improving outcomes for all.

Perfectly situated at the Gateway to the Americas, we have many exciting programs focused on global health. As a PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing Human Resources Development and Patient Safety, we provide significant leadership, education, and service contributions in the Pan American region and Caribbean. SONHS enjoys ongoing partnerships with peer institutions in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, and Spain, among other nations.

As you can see, our dynamic, supportive campus environment is excelling. On a personal level, I wholly believe in the power of education to uplift and transform. Here at SONHS, we are leveraging education, research, and clinical and community service to make positive changes for the health of the world. I hope you will consider joining the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies in pursuing this transformative mission.
