The University of Miami is one of 69 cohort sites across the United States participating in the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program. Launched and supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2023, Miami-ECHO is a seven-year research initiative aimed towards understanding how environmental exposures (including physical, chemical, social, behavioral, biological, natural, and built environments) that occur early in children’s lives affect their development, health, and well-being. Our research team at the University of Miami plans to recruit over 1,250 pregnant women, their children, and the conceiving fathers in Miami-Dade County, Florida.
Miami-ECHO is led by Dr. Hudson Santos Jr. and Dr. Michael Paidas, in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of researchers from Maternal Child Health, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Public Health, Nursing Science, and Pediatrics who will closely follow the pregnant women, their children, and the conceiving fathers to monitor their health outcomes over time.
