Who/What Is a Clinical Preceptor?

A preceptor for nursing students is a licensed and experienced healthcare professional typically a registered nurse (RN), nurse practitioner (NP), or other qualified provider who supervises, mentors, and evaluates nursing students during their clinical training.

A nursing preceptor acts as both a teacher and role model in a real-world clinical setting.

Their responsibilities include:

  • Supervising students as they provide patient care
  • Demonstrating clinical skills and best practices
  • Guiding critical thinking and clinical decision-making
  • Helping students transition from classroom learning to professional practice
