The degree requirement to precept nursing students at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS) depends on the program level of the student (undergraduate or graduate) and the type of clinical experience.
- Undergraduate preceptors must:
- Hold a BSN or higher degree and possess an active, unencumbered RN license in Florida to precept undergraduates
- Graduate preceptors must:
- a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree with an active, unencumbered Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in Florida, or
- a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree with an active clinical license in Florida.
- Have at least one year of work experience in the current clinical position
- Submit required documentation to the School of Nursing and Health Studies (resume/CV, license, and national certification)
- Be approved by both the School of Nursing and Health Studies and the clinical site/agency that has an active affiliation agreement with SONHS
- Be present and available while the student is providing clinical care
Preceptor Responsibilities
- Guide, teach, and evaluate the student’s performance in a clinical setting, provide ongoing feedback, and ensure patient/client safety while fostering professional development
- Complete a formal student evaluation provided by the School of Nursing and Health Studies
- Engage with School of Nursing and Health Studies faculty/clinical instructors
- Commitment to precept a minimum of one student per semester (Those who precept for a minimum of two semesters within a given academic year are eligible for preceptor incentives)
